PLUME or MentLife?

The PhD student section organizes two mentorship programs: PLUME and MentLife. PLUME is our own mentorship program and provides mentors for PhD students all over LTH. MentLife has a seminar and a mentorship part and is co-organized with former PLUME mentor Lars Erik Edholm and student representatives the faculties of Science and Medicine. The mentorship part of MentLife is very similar to PLUME, but it is directed to PhD students working within life science. You are very welcome to apply for both programs (application for MentLife opens on April 3). The applications are very similar.

PLUME 2014 – Finding Mentors

A key success factor for PLUME is finding good mentors. Today we presented PLUME to the LTH industry advisory board in order to spread the word about PLUME and to get help in recruiting mentors. We were very happy about the response – mentorship programs are of high interest to the industry! But it was made clear that we need to give support to the mentors during the program. This is something we do both in written guidelines and in common seminars but we will think of how we can improve on this even more. Participating in a mentorship program is an opportunity for development both for the mentor and the mentee!

The pre-application is now closed. Thank you all who filled it in, it is very useful for us in our efforts in finding mentors. The final application for PhD students will open in April and the application deadline will be May 7.

Application for mentors is already open: Application form.

Pre-application for PLUME 2014 is open!

We have some good news – our mentorship programme PLUME will be back in 2014!

To get a senior mentor from industry (or academia) can be a great help for finding out what you can do and what you want with your career. The application for PLUME 2014 will be in May and the programme will start after the summer. Right now you can fill in pre-application for the programme – this is to facilitate for us to find mentors. PLUME 2013 is cancelled!

We are sorry to announce that PLUME 2013 has been cancelled. The reason is that we have not been able to find enough mentors. Hopefully we can run PLUME next year instead, but for this we need your help! We need a few new PhD students who want to organize PLUME 2014. The workload is not great and the organizers from previous years can tell you how to do it. Moreover, you will be guaranteed to get a mentor yourself! If you are interested in this, or have any questions please contact us at dokt-plume (at) tlth.se.

Also note that the Life Science mentorship program, MentLife, will be held this year. We will start to take applications at the end of May.

Join our Mentorship Programmes!

Our much appeciated mentor program PLUME is now back for the fourth year! You find the application for PhD students here, and the application for mentors here. Have a look at the PLUME web page, to find out what the program comprises and why it is such a good idea to apply.

We are also co-organizing LifeSciMentNet, a new mentorship program for PhD students within the Life Sciences. The program will start later in the spring and it will be similar to PLUME but it will also be focused on getting to know and networking with Life Science companies. If this seems interesting to you, please sign up here to recieve more information about the programme and about how to apply for it.

Fun is Other People

A couple of weeks ago we had the first board meeting of 2013. We have a diverse board of people from different departments from all over LTH and from all stages in their PhD studies. We were very glad to welcome two “new” members to the board: Maj and Vahid, who bring energy, ideas and experience to the board.

We talked about ideas for the upcoming year and discussed what our mission is and why we have chosen to join the board. We soon came up with a motto: Fun is other people. I think that is a good summary of what we will try to do: Bring PhD students from all over LTH together to do fun things together. And this does not only mean social events; the mentorship program PLUME is a way to connect with interesting people who have a PhD in their baggage and want to share their experiences and connections with us, and the education council brings together enthusiastic PhD students who fight for better PhD education. Just because these activities have a larger purpose it doesn’t mean that they’re not fun.

If you have any ideas for what the section could do during 2013, or if you would like to know more about what we are planning, please feel free to contact anyone in the board (see contact page). Hope to hear from you!
